Bikepacking in Sicily

Shorts were being packed away for the season in the UK so Mono headed to Sicily, chasing the sun and hoping to ride some of the Italian island’s Giro D’Italia routes. The plan was to explore as widely as possible in 7 days, carrying everything in two simple bike bags: a Roadrunner Jammer on the bars and Restrap’s 14l saddle pack on the back. There was a rough plan sketched pre-trip but the next day’s ride and a place to stay would be fixed over dinner each night, allowing for route changes if we had tired legs or discovered a fine restaurant along the way.

Not just an inner tube

I gave myself two cycling goals for this year: Firstly, prove to myself I could compete and have fun racing at the next level, and so ultimately retain my second category race license. Secondly, to undertake a bike packing tour of some sort.

Dalsland Runt 2017

Placed between one of Sweden’s largest lakes, Lake Vänern, and the Norwegian border, Dalsand is known by many Swedes as ‘the forgotten part of Sweden’. Since 2011 it’s also home to Dalsland Runt, a gravel-heavy spin through the area organised by Vänersborg racing club. This year Mono joined them and around 70 other riders for the 3-day event.

Nice

With racing season in flow but summer weather yet to arrive in London, Mono headed to Nice to get some sun-kissed training rides in the mountains. As the finishing spot for one of cycling’s classic races - Paris-Nice - and many Tour stages, it’s road bike friendly and flush with good route options whichever way you head out of town.
